Dark Night of the Soul: Finding Joy in the Shadows

The journey of the Dark Night of the Soul is one that many will inevitably face, but few truly understand until they are in its depths. It is not simply a season of sadness, nor is it a fleeting moment of doubt. It is a profound unraveling of identity, beliefs, and everything we once held as certain. It is a complete stripping away of the old, making space for something deeper, truer, and more aligned with our soul's purpose.

In a recent episode of my podcast, The Alchemy of Light and Shadow, I had the honour of discussing this sacred transformation with three beautiful souls: Junior, Quinn, and Kimberly. Each of them shared their unique journey through their own Dark Night, offering wisdom, vulnerability, and a profound sense of hope. I also offer a free guided meditation. You can download it here.

Albert Camus once wrote:

"In the middle of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer."

This sentiment captures the essence of the Dark Night Of The Soul. Though it may feel like a prolonged winter of the soul, the light within us remains, waiting for its moment to reemerge.

The Origins of the Dark Night

The term Dark Night of the Soul originates from the 16th-century Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross, who wrote La Noche Oscura del Alma, describing the soul’s passage through darkness before reaching divine union. But beyond religious tradition, Carl Jung spoke of the shadow self—a necessary confrontation with our own darkness as a path to deeper self-awareness. In modern spirituality, the Dark Night is often seen as an initiation, a necessary breaking apart so that something greater can emerge.

Three Journeys Through the Dark Night On My Podcast

Junior’s Story: A Journey from Trauma to Spiritual Awakening

Junior’s Dark Night of the soul began at the age of 15 when he was physically assaulted and held at gunpoint. This traumatic event led him to close himself off from others, fostering distrust and self-hatred. A few months later, he experienced social rejection from his peers, deepening his isolation. Over the years, he developed a pattern of self-loathing and emotional detachment, unable to seek support due to cultural and generational beliefs surrounding therapy.

Yet, amid the darkness, there were moments of light. A white light appeared to him at the age of 16, a spiritual sign that something significant was about to unfold. Later, heartbreak shattered him once more, forcing him to make a pivotal choice: drown in despair or seek healing. Writing became his salvation, allowing him to process his emotions and connect with his own voice. His awakening came in stages, through poetry, meditation, and ultimately, self-acceptance. Junior's words hold wisdom: "Hatred gets you nowhere. Whether towards yourself or others, it only keeps you trapped. The way forward is through love."

Quinn’s Story: Surrendering to the Unknown

Quinn’s Dark Night arrived in waves. She had experienced depression before, but this time it was different. The dismantling of her life was undeniable—everything she had built began to crumble. The exhaustion was profound, and she initially believed she just needed rest. But as things continued to fall away, she recognised the deeper nature of the transformation taking place.

Surrender became her only option. At first, it felt like stepping into complete darkness, like turning off the headlights on an unfamiliar road. Yet, as she leaned into the unknown, the breadcrumbs of guidance began to appear. Small moments of clarity, synchronicities, and messages from spirit reassured her that she was not alone. "Remember who you are," became a mantra whispered by her guides. Through surrender and trust, Quinn emerged from her Dark Night with a new path—one dedicated to energy healing and sacred spaces, both within and without.

Kimberly’s Story: Healing Through Nature and Self-Love

Kimberly had faced multiple Dark Nights of the soul throughout her life, but her most profound one arrived in midlife. She had a fulfilling job and a loving relationship, yet she found herself deeply unsatisfied, exhausted, and questioning everything. At first, she attributed her symptoms to menopause, but she soon realised that what she was experiencing was a spiritual reckoning.

The moment she stopped resisting was the moment transformation truly began. She turned to nature, walking in the woods daily, and found solace in the presence of owls that appeared to her repeatedly—messengers of wisdom. Through meditation, she connected with her higher self, a loving presence that had always been there but was now undeniable. Kimberly’s revelation was profound: "I had spent years abandoning myself. My healing began when I finally stopped running and embraced all of me—the wounded, the strong, the forgotten, and the light."

My Own Dark Night

I, too, have navigated multiple Dark Nights of the Soul. My first came when I was 29, disillusioned with corporate life and yearning for something more. My second arrived when my sister, an innocent soul, experienced a traumatic event that shattered her and our family. The most recent came as I bore witness to the suffering of the world—particularly the genocide in Gaza.

Each time, I found myself stripped bare, questioning everything, even my faith in the universe. But each time, something within me endured. I found solace in poetry, in spiritual connection, in nature, and in service to others. My path has led me to be a guide for those traversing their own dark nights, reminding them that even in the depths of despair, the light has never truly left.

Lessons from the Dark Night Of The Soul

  1. Surrender is Key – Resisting the darkness only deepens suffering. The moment we surrender, we allow transformation to take place.

  2. You Are Never Alone – Even in the isolation of the Dark Night, spirit guides, ancestors, and higher consciousness are present, waiting for you to listen.

  3. Creativity is Medicine – Writing, art, music, and movement can be pathways to healing and integration.

  4. Forgiveness and Compassion Open the Heart – Self-forgiveness is essential in allowing ourselves to move forward with love.

  5. Nature is a Guide – Whether it’s the grounding energy of the earth, the wisdom of animals, or the cleansing power of water, nature holds powerful healing.

Finding the Light Again

The Dark Night is not a punishment; it is an initiation. It is an invitation to let go of what no longer serves and step into the truest version of ourselves. If you are currently in this space, know that this is not the end of your story. The darkness is not your enemy—it is your teacher.

As Rumi beautifully reminds us:

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”

Frequently Asked Questions about The Dark Night of the Soul

1. What is the Dark Night of the Soul?

The Dark Night of the Soul refers to a profound period of spiritual desolation, disconnection, and existential crisis. It's a phase where individuals feel a deep sense of meaninglessness and the absence of divine presence. This concept was extensively described by the 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross.

2. How is it different from depression?

While both involve deep sadness and a sense of hopelessness, the Dark Night of the Soul is primarily a spiritual crisis leading to personal transformation and spiritual awakening. Depression, on the other hand, is a mental health condition that may not necessarily have a spiritual component and often requires clinical treatment. However, sometimes the two are interlinked.

3. What triggers the Dark Night of the Soul?

It can be triggered by significant life events such as the death of a loved one, divorce, major financial loss, or a deep yearning for spiritual growth. These events can lead to intense introspection and a sense of spiritual desolation.

4. How long does the Dark Night of the Soul last?

The duration varies for each individual. For some, it may last weeks or months; for others, it can persist for years. Historical figures like Mother Teresa experienced this phase for decades. The length often depends on the individual's personal journey and the depth of their spiritual transformation.

5. What are the common signs and symptoms?

  • A profound sense of meaninglessness.

  • Feeling disconnected from God or a higher power.

  • Loss of interest in previously meaningful activities.

  • Deep emotional pain and inner turmoil.

  • Questioning long-held beliefs and values.

  • A sense of isolation and loneliness.

6. How can one navigate through this challenging period?

  • Acceptance and Surrender: Embrace the experience rather than resist it. Understand that it's a transformative process.

  • Seek Support: Engage with spiritual counselors or support groups who understand this journey.

  • Self-Care: Prioritize rest, nutrition, and activities that nurture your well-being.

  • Patience: Recognize that transformation is a gradual process; allow yourself the time to heal and grow.

7. Is the Dark Night of the Soul necessary for spiritual growth?

Not everyone will experience the Dark Night of the Soul, but for those who do, it often serves as a catalyst for profound spiritual awakening and personal transformation. It can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and a more intimate connection with the divine.

8. Can the Dark Night of the Soul recur?

Yes, individuals may experience multiple periods of spiritual desolation throughout their lives, especially during significant transitions or challenges. Each episode can offer deeper insights and opportunities for growth.

9. How does one differentiate between a spiritual crisis and a mental health issue?

While both can present similar symptoms, a spiritual crisis like the Dark Night of the Soul is often accompanied by a deep yearning for spiritual connection and existential questioning. Mental health issues may not have this spiritual component and can include a broader range of symptoms. It's essential to consult with both mental health professionals and spiritual advisors to determine the nature of the experience.

10. What happens after emerging from the Dark Night of the Soul?

Individuals often report a renewed sense of purpose, deeper spiritual connection, and greater clarity about their life's path. The experience can lead to heightened compassion, wisdom, and an enriched understanding of oneself and the universe.

Remember, the Dark Night of the Soul is a deeply personal journey. While it can be challenging, many find that it leads to profound personal and spiritual growth. If you're navigating this path, consider seeking guidance from both spiritual and mental health professionals to support you through the process.
